Spring Bedroom Tour

March 19, 2020

Howdy! Hello! Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here! I’m excited to be a part of the home tour and share my bedroom Spring update. In October of 2019, we moved into this house we designed and built ourselves. When I say “built”, I mean we did the general contracting in addition to putting in a lot of work, blood, sweat and, well, I don’t remember any tears. One of the things we did was put up the “extra” trim work like the board and batten and shiplap walls in this bedroom.

Too much white? We heard this from some people during construction, but I love it. With the texture and pattern created by the board and batten and shiplap, the walls are anything but plain and boring. And the white base allows me to change the color pallet on a whim…like wanting a Springtime refresh!

For reference, here’s what our bedroom looked like BEFORE I swapped out a few things for Spring.

When I decided to change things up in this room for Spring, I knew it would just be a few small changes that would reinvigorate this space. I also knew I wanted to use a quilt my mom made for me with these beautiful turquoise and greens that are perfectly spring-y. Then I ran to Home Goods to find some pillows. Unfortunately, the pillows I found weren’t the right color, which was great because I ended up finding exactly what I needed in a basket of unused pillows in the Family Room…and they were free (well, already paid for). So, I shopped my house for the other things too and found everything I needed: Flowers/vases, a throw blanket, and handled tray for the foot of the bed! Moral of the story: save money and shop your own house, first!

AFTER

The quilt was my starting point and provided the color pallet for the accent pieces.

Our TV is hiding behind the canvas photograph of our kids. The next picture is of the L-brackets I attached to the canvas so I can hang it on the TV when I don’t want to look at/take pics of the black box. We found the mantel at a shop in our town’s downtown square. It gives the room another focal point and the cozy vibes of a fireplace. I’m still figuring out what I want to do with the space inside of it.

I love stacking books and putting pretty things on top. I am a big believer that decorative pieces should either be functional or incite great joy or memories. If they don’t, they aren’t worth my time to dust them. This seashell reminds me of the vacation with my husband in Mexico where we found it. For this reason, plants, candles, books, dishes, and family photos are my staples.

I love to “group” decorative pieces in trays. It keeps them from looking disjointed and it makes it much easier to move them all at once for dusting or using the space for something else.

Here’s a link to this throw blanket.

I made our barn doors using scraps leftover from construction, and this is the barn door hardware we used.

I am currently working on getting this floor plan ready to sell as a construction set. It’s 3300 sq. ft., 2 stories, 4 beds, 4 baths, with attached garage (unlike ours).
