Welcome! I am so glad you’re here! It’s REVEAL time! I am so excited to share with you my new and improved home office complete with new DIY bookshelves, art, sconces and more!
If you missed them, here are the links to WEEK 1, WEEK 2, WEEK 3, and WEEK 4 and WEEK 5
For those of you who are new to my page, Hello! I’m Jessica, wife to Cody, and mom to 2 boys and a girl. I have a background in architecture and designed this home that we just built in a small Texas town. We self-contracted the build…and we are still finishing up a few projects. Most days you can find me on Instagram @the.old.barn
HERE SHE IS! My pretty, bright and functional office! I am so happy with how it all come together!
Before I get ahead of myself, let me remind you what this space used to look like- THE BEFORE
BEFORE
We started with 12″ deep lower cabinets and the paint color Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. We then built the bookshelves with vertical shiplap backing. Go back to WEEK 2, WEEK 3, WEEK 4 , and WEEK 5 to see how we built them.
We thought a full wall of shelves would overwhelm the space, so opted to leave an open wall area for art and sconces.
I painted this artwork and hung the sconces using the Magic Light Trick. Go check out WEEK 5 to see how I did added these sconce without wiring them.
Our BARN DOOR and hardware can be found here. I stained it to work with the floors and desk. After using a wood conditioner, I used Verathane Special Walnut stain, wiped it quickly then Verathane Weathered Oak and wiped the excess quickly.
Finally, I styled the shelves. This is a functioning office with real books and items I use daily for my work. I have hidden less than pretty items in baskets and file boxes. Paperbacks, office supplies and other not-so-pretty stuff hide in the cabinets below. Standing some books, while stacking others gives you a nice elevated perch for pretty little decor pieces. If the color of the spines isn’t working aesthetically, you can flip your books pages edge out, and sometimes removing the dust jacket helps.
Office lighting is very important! I chose the beautifully classic sconces to flank the art and brighten up the recessed area. These Crystorama sconces are called Riverdale in Satin Nickel. They come in seven other metal finish options as well! I love their long elegant stem, but it’s adjustable so I can even shorten it if I want or change out the glass ball finial for a satin nickel one.
